## What a TENS order needs under Medicare

The documentation steps from the Medicare TENS policy. Other plans set their own rules.

1. 1

    ### The treating clinician orders it

The clinician who treats the condition causing the pain is the one who orders the TENS unit.

[CMS LCD L33802, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulators (TENS)](https://www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/view/lcd.aspx?lcdid=33802)
2. 2

    ### A written order before delivery

Medicare requires a face-to-face visit and a written order that reaches the supplier before the unit is delivered.

    [CMS Policy Article A52520, TENS](https://www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/view/article.aspx?articleid=52520)
3. 3

    ### Send the preauthorization

Send Analgesic Healthcare the preauthorization form with the patient's name, date of birth and insurance details.

    [The preauthorization form](https://analgesic.multisites.ai/preauthorization-form)
4. 4

    ### A trial period, for chronic pain

For chronic pain, Medicare pays for a trial of at least one month and no more than two, monitored by the treating clinician.

[CMS LCD L33802, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulators (TENS)](https://www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/view/lcd.aspx?lcdid=33802)
5. 5

    ### The clinician decides what comes next

If the unit helps, it can become part of the patient's care. If it brings no relief, TENS is ruled out.

[CMS NCD 160.7.1, Assessing Patient's Suitability for Electrical Nerve Stimulation Therapy](https://www.cms.gov/medicare-coverage-database/view/ncd.aspx?NCDId=63)
