Anatomy

Lumbar spine

The lumbar spine is the lower back section of the spine. Cleveland Clinic says it consists of five vertebrae that support body weight and protect the spinal cord.

Cleveland Clinic says your lumbar spine consists of the five vertebrae in your lower back. It provides support for the weight of your body, surrounds and protects your spinal cord, and allows for a wide range of body motions. Many conditions can affect this area, including lower back pain, arthritis and disk disease. For TENS, University of Iowa Health Care says not to place electrode pads directly on your backbone, and the NHS says not to use TENS on your chest and back at the same time. Medicare's TENS policy denies TENS for chronic low back pain. Read TENS for lower back pain and see sciatica.
