What a TENS order needs under Medicare

The documentation steps from the Medicare TENS policy. Other plans set their own rules.

  1. See your treating clinician

The clinician who treats the condition causing your pain is the one who orders the TENS unit.

CMS LCD L33802, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulators (TENS)
  2. A written order before delivery

Medicare requires a face-to-face visit and a written order that reaches the supplier before the unit is delivered.

    CMS Policy Article A52520, TENS
  3. The clinic sends the preauthorization

Your doctor or physical therapist sends Analgesic Healthcare the preauthorization form with your name, date of birth and insurance details.

  4. A trial period, for chronic pain

For chronic pain, Medicare pays for a trial of at least one month and no more than two, watched by your clinician.

CMS LCD L33802, Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulators (TENS)
  5. Your clinician decides what comes next

If the unit helps, it can become part of your care. If it brings no relief, TENS is ruled out.
