Endorphins

Endorphins are hormones your brain releases when your body feels pain or stress. The NHS says TENS is thought to work partly by encouraging their release.

Cleveland Clinic says endorphins are hormones released when your body feels pain or stress, and they are produced to help relieve pain, reduce stress and improve mood. The NHS says TENS is thought to work by encouraging your body to release natural painkillers called endorphins. University of Iowa Health Care says the electrical pulses can release endorphins and other substances. This is a proposed explanation. The NHS says TENS does not work for everyone. See gate control theory for the other main idea. Ask your clinician whether TENS suits your pain. Read how a TENS unit works.
