Non-opioid pain management
Non-opioid pain management means ways to treat pain that do not use opioid drugs. CDC says nonopioid therapies are preferred for subacute and chronic pain.
CDC says nonopioid therapies are preferred for subacute and chronic pain, and that nonpharmacologic and nonopioid pharmacologic therapies should be maximized as appropriate because they do not carry the same risks as opioids. CDC lists exercise, physical therapy methods, mind-body practices and nonopioid medicines as examples. CDC also notes that nonpharmacologic therapies are not always covered or fully covered by insurance. A TENS unit is a non-drug option that your clinician may include in a plan, but CDC does not list it on this page. Ask your clinician about your options and do not stop or start any medicine on your own. Read pain management without opioids.
