Durable medical equipment
Durable medical equipment, or DME, is medical equipment made for repeated use at home. Medicare Part B covers medically necessary DME when a doctor or other provider orders it for home use.
Medicare.gov defines DME as equipment that is durable, used for a medical reason, typically only useful to someone who is sick or injured, used in your home and expected to last at least 3 years. Medicare.gov says Part B covers medically necessary DME if your doctor or other health care provider orders it for use in your home. It also says Medicare pays for DME only when you get it from a supplier enrolled in Medicare. Medicare's TENS rules sit in a policy written by a DME MAC. Whether a TENS unit is covered depends on the policy criteria and on your plan, not on this definition. Read how insurance and Medicare cover a TENS unit.
