Written order prior to delivery

A written order prior to delivery, or WOPD, is a complete order that a supplier must hold before it delivers certain items that CMS places on a required list.

CMS says that for items on its Required Face-to-Face Encounter and Written Order Prior to Delivery List, a complete order is required before the item is delivered. For all other items, the order is required before the claim is submitted. The Medicare TENS policy article says that if a supplier delivers an item before it has a WOPD, the claim is denied as not reasonable and necessary. The article applies this to specified codes. Ask your clinician or supplier whether your TENS code is on the current CMS list. A face-to-face encounter also applies to listed items. Clinics can read the referral documentation guide.
